FIELD NOTES
CDMX is rich in culture & contradictions. While ancient pyramids lay just outside the city, modern skyscrapers reach for the sky in the core. While wealthy neighbourhoods offer trendy cafes, and michelin star restaurants, others reveal rough unfinished masonry block homes and unkempt streets.
What remains true of the whole city though, is the culture of art & food. Murals, art, and architecture flood the streets in every neighbourhood we visited, and some of the best food I’ve ever tasted was being sold on street corners, holes in the walls, and underground metro stations.
While 10 days was hardly enough to scratch the surface, we did our best, exploring new neighbourhoods and steeping ourselves in the culture.
Some notable highlights include:
- Being stuck in the underground metro during an earthquake
- Losing an entire roll of film
- Stumbling upon Leon Trotsky’s house and place of murder (now a museum)
Areas visited: Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Centro, Coyoacan, Xochimilco, Iztapalapa, Teotihuacan
Favourite Experiences: Teotihuacan pyramids, Leon Trotsky house, Chorizo tacos (El Vilsito), Mexican Old Fashioned (Licoreria Limantour), the metro, Lucha Libre, Esquina Común & the general quality and availability of great food and coffee
